Data & Strategy

Beyond "First Name":
Behavioral Segmentation.

Data and analytics documents

Putting `Hey {{first_name}}!` at the top of your email is not personalization. It is basic database retrieval.

True personalization is about relevance. It is about understanding what a subscriber cares about right now, and sending them content that matches that exact context. If you run an outdoor gear brand and a subscriber only ever clicks on hiking boots, sending them an email about kayaks is a waste of their attention.

The most advanced email marketers use Behavioral Segmentation. They let the subscriber's actions dictate the marketing funnel automatically.

The "Click-to-Tag" Architecture

You don't need a massive data-science team to pull this off. You just need a modern email platform (like Loops or Brevo) and a strategy we call "Click-to-Tag."

How Click-to-Tag Works

1. The Action

You send a broadcast email containing three different articles: Marketing, Design, and Engineering. The user clicks the link to the Design article.

2. The Invisible Tag

Your email platform silently attaches a `tag:interest_design` to their contact profile in your database the moment they click.

3. The Automation

That tag acts as a trigger. It automatically enters them into a highly targeted 3-part email sequence selling your Design Course.

Self-Segmenting Welcome Flows

The best time to learn about your customer is the second they join your list. But nobody wants to fill out a 10-question survey just to get a newsletter.

Instead, build a self-segmenting welcome email. In the very first email you send, say something like:

"I want to make sure I only send you things you actually care about. What best describes your current role? Click one of the links below:"

Whichever link they click instantly applies a tag to their profile. You now have rich, zero-party data that allows you to dynamically change the copy of every future email they receive.

Advanced Play

Dynamic Content Blocks

You don't always need to write completely different emails. Most modern platforms allow you to write one main broadcast, but insert Dynamic Content Blocks. For example, the top paragraph of your email can be programmed to read: "As an agency owner..." for one segment, and "As a founder..." for another segment—all within the same campaign.

Automate your Segmenting.
